Now is the time to be proactive in preventing the cold and flu season from getting the better of you. Some folks will wait until the colder weather hits before taking action, and others will wait until they actually get sick to take action. What I'm suggesting here is that you be a step ahead of the game by starting now, and prevent yourself from getting sick at all! There is a Chinese herbal formula that I'm quite fond of, and it's pretty mild and safe to recommend to a large group of people.
Normally, I'm hesitant to prescribe herbs without someone being a patient of mine. There are hundreds of Chinese Herbal formulas to prescribe, and I like to evaluate an individual case in order to prescribe formulas to suit each client. However, I feel this herbal formula can be considered a 'general-use' formula; it can be safely used by quite a few folks. But, to be sure, you should check with your Chinese Medicine practitioner.
The reason I recommend starting this formula now, is that it is meant to build up your "surface" immune function, or Wei Qi (defensive qi) in Chinese Medicine terms. From the Chinese perspective, the body has numerous types of Qi (life energy), but this particular type of Qi, Wei Qi, circulates throughout the skin and outer muscle layers, which pretty much constitutes the surface of the body. When the Wei Qi is insufficient, the body has a compromised ability to ward off the wind and the cold environment. The very climate we are starting to see now that we are in the season of fall.
If wind and cold enter the body, with little or no Wei Qi to protect it, the wind and cold can pass further into the body, mostly the head and the Lungs. This wind cold invasion can turn into a cold or flu. There are other herbal formulas and treatments to address this phase, but I'm talking about preventing it altogether.
So what is this herbal formula? It's called Yu Ping Feng Sang, commonly translated as Jade Windscreen Formula. Traditionally there are only 3 herbs in it: White Atractylodes (Bai Zhu), Siler (Fang Feng), and Astragalus (Huang Qi). White Atractylodes helps to strengthen the superficial resistance; Siler dispels the wind, cold and damp; Astraglus consolidates the defensive qi and tonifies vital energy. The format of the formula you get (ie, pills, powder, tablet, tincture) and who you are (pretty healthy, or weak and debilitated, quite responsive to herbs or not very responsive to herbs), would help determine your dosage.
Here's to staying cold/flu-free this season!
