What's Your Type? - Homeopathich Constitutions

Homeopathy and Constitutional Types

In homeopathy, a constitution is a blend of inherited make-up, formative experiences and the influence of environment. Constitutions become an important tool when dealing with chronic or recurrent conditions. There may be three different remedies for a client and knowing their constitutional type can factor into whether one or the other would be more effective. It's not a critical factor in the decision because it is likely that all types will receive at least some benefit from any of the remedies but taking the constitutional type into consideration can allow you to adjust the therapies for optimal results.

Constitutional homeopathy aims at long-term treatment of chronic issues. So, instead of treating a persistent ear infection with anti-biotics (with a high likelihood of recurrence), homeopathic medication could be prescribed in such a manner that it would not only relieve the current infection but would also strengthen the system to prevent any future infections.

Dr. James Tyler Kent was the first homeopath to observe that people with similar constitutions tended to suffer from the similar types of disease and seemed to respond to the same types of remedies. This led to constitution becoming a tool used in homeopathic treatment.

There are 6 main constitutional types. They are (a progression from Emotion-centered to Intellect-centered types) as follows:

Sulphur/ Pulsatilla/ Phosphorus/ Calcarea/ Lycopodium/ Silica.

These types have been grouped into two "families". The families are called "Genotypes" and are known as:

1. The Sulphur Family (Sulphur/ Lycopodium / Calcarea carbonica)

more earthy/emotional

2. The Silica Family (Silicea/ Pulsatilla/ Phosphorus)

more mental/intellectual.

Sulphur Family:

Sulphur: Have a strong, hot, fiery personality. They are generous in giving out energies and money.

Lycopodium: Have high self-esteem and are resilient and adaptable. They can burn brightly.

Calcarea carbonica: Have a lustrous personality and can be very hard workers. They understand others and by nature are nurturers.

Silica Family:

Silica: This type has many facets. They are durable, holds to principles and are conscientious.

Pulsatilla: This type has a delightful personality. They are radiant and lovely in moving with the winds of events.

Phosphorus: They radiate a captivating energy. They are spontaneous and call upon strong psychic sensitivity and extrasensory perception.

This is just a brief overview of the concept of constitutional types and I have only touched on genotypes. There are also six phenotypes which represent the negative aspects of personality presentations evident under stress. Through proper treatment, phenotypes can be remedied back to the more balanced genotype.
