Hypertension and Water Fasting

Hypertension is a condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is far too high. Blood pressure is the force of blood that is pushing up against the walls of the blood vessels. If the pressure is too high, the heart has to work harder to pump, and this could cause organ damage and heart attack. The normal level for blood pressure is below 120/80, where 120 represents the systolic measurement (max pressure) and 80 represents the diastolic measurement (min pressure). Blood pressure between 120/80 and 139/89 is called prehypertension, and a reading of 140/90 or higher is considered hypertension.

My blood pressure is usually between 160/95 and 175/100, so I have hypertension along with congestive heart failure and a number of other ailments. I have had the condition for at least 5 years now and probably much longer than that. I only went to my doctor when I started to get winded doing very minor tasks such as walking upstairs from the basement. I went and had all the blood work done and did the pulmonary function tests. I will never forget that!

Last year I did a 21 day water fast after which my pressure had come down into the normal range of 125/85, but more importantly, it was consistently down at that level. Dr Joel Fuhrman, M.D. in his book, "Fasting and Eating for Health", said the following, "A physician-supervised therapeutic fast can be utilized to bring a patient to a new level of cardiac safety. Fasting, in conjunction with optimal nutrition before and after the fast, offers the ability to undo the damage done to the body by the rich diets of modern societies". Through fasting one can rapidly bring down blood pressure in a way that no drug could ever do. Fasting removes the plaque that lines the blood vessels and through that process allows more blood (Oxygen) to circulate.

In my case, I also have edema which I suspect many with Hypertension also have. During the fast last year I remember my ankles got so skinny they didn't look normal and my shoes were sloppy fitting instead of snug. My feet actually felt lighter. My wrists were thinner as well. I was able to walk farther and farther each day to the point I was actually jogging for a minute at a time. Something I haven't been able to do in a long, long time.

So I am doing it again, but this time I will succeed in reaching my goals, which are to normalize my blood pressure, improve my congestive heart failure condition, get rid of the edema, and to lose 80 lbs total.

The fast started August 29th, 2011 and as I write this I am on my 32nd day.

I am now at day 32 of my water fast and my blood pressure is now completely normal. I am enjoying countless benefits from the fast but the improvement in blood pressure and heart function is what I am most thrilled about.
